Best Areas to Stay in San Francisco & My Favorite Hotels (2025)

San Francisco is a beautiful city which offers a variety of neighborhoods and districts. Each of them feels like its own unique world and has its own charm. From the bustling streets of downtown to the quiet charm of its residential enclaves, each district has a personality all its own. As a local, I can tell you that exploring the city often feels like hopping between different small villages, each with its own vibe, history, and charm.

In this blog post, I put together all the best areas to stay in San Francisco, in terms of safety and location to visit all the iconic landmarks, nice restaurants and cafes.

The best Areas to stay in san franciso

Fisherman’s Wharf

If you’re looking for stunning waterfront views and you don’t like walking up hills (since this area is mostly flat), Fisherman’s Wharf is a great option, offering easy access to attractions like Pier 39, Alcatraz, Ghirardelli Square and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can find there many bike rentals and go to the Golden Gate Bridge along the ocean. It’s also located close to North Beach and Little Italy, with some great vibes and Italian restaurants. It’s definitely one of my favorite neighborhoods to stay when travelling to San Francisco.

Union Square/SF Downtown

Union Square is the heart of San Francisco located in San Francisco downtown, known for its vibrant atmosphere, luxury shopping, and proximity to top dining and cultural experiences. When it comes to hotels, there’s something for every type of traveler, whether you’re looking for elegance, modern flair, or classic charm.

Union Square is located a bit further away from the ocean than Fisherman’s Wharf and it’s more busy. It’s also well-connected, making it easy to explore other neighborhoods in the city. Whether you’re hopping on a historic cable car, catching a tram, or grabbing an Uber, you’ll find that getting to famous landmarks like Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Ferry Building.

With its central location, Union Square is the perfect base for discovering all the exciting things San Francisco has to offer.

Nob Hill is one of San Francisco's most picturesque and upscale neighborhoods, offering stunning views and historic charm. It used to be the most expensive neighborhood with a lot of palaces and mansions, where rich people used to live. The area is home to some of the city's most luxurious hotels, making it the perfect spot for your stay. Currently Nob Hill is mostly a residential neighborhood with lots of old buildings, offering a great vibe. Nob Hill is located just a short walk from vibrant downtown San Francisco

EMBARCADERO

The Embarcadero is an iconic, waterfront area in San Francisco, located between San Franicsco Financial District and Fisherman’s Wharf, it’s located inside the bay. It offers a bustling promenade where you can enjoy stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline.

The Embarcadero is home to some of the city's top landmarks, like the Ferry Building, which has a vibrant marketplace with artisan food, fresh produce, and local goods. You’ll also find beautiful parks, piers (Pier 7 is my favorite), and a lively atmosphere perfect for strolling or cycling along the water’s edge. If you decide to stay in Embarcadero, you will be in close location to both fantastic neighborhoods - Fisherman’s wharf and SF Downtown.
