Where to stay in San Francisco and how to choose the right neighborhood in the city?

As a San Francisco local and blogger, I’ve been asked this question many times — where to stay in San Francisco and which neighborhoods are safest for tourists. It really depends on what you’re looking for, but I’m happy to share my personal favorite areas, that I always recommend to friends visiting from out of town. Each neighborhood offers something unique, but the ones below have a great mix of amazing food, lively nightlife, and easy access to the city’s main landmarks.

Here are my three favorite areas to stay in San Francisco — areas that are generally safe, with fewer issues related to homelessness compared to other parts of the city.

  • North of San Francisco

(North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina, Pacific heights, Cow Hollow)

  • Union Square / Downtown / Nob Hill

  • Embarcadero/Financial District

The Best Neighborhoods to Visit in San Francisco (According to a Local)

Here’s a list of my favorite San Francisco neighborhoods according to a local, living there for over 6 years:

Walking in the Marina neighborhood in San Francisco

North Beach (Little Italy)

If you’re looking for cozy cafés with great espresso, classic Italian restaurants with delicious food, and streets that are perfect for wandering, check out North Beach (Little Italy). It’s definitely my favorite neighborhood in San Francisco which offers amazing things to do and to see. Grab a coffee in one of the cafes, stroll through Washington Square Park or Telegraph Hill, and enjoy one of the most charming corners of the city. You’ll also find there some nice pubs and jazz clubs!

My go-to spots in North Beach: Cafe Greco, Cafe Angolo, Delicatessen for Gelato (on Columbus Ave), Pizza in Tony’s, Pizza in Flour and Water, Burger in Mo’s Grill

The Marina District & The Presidio

The Marina feels bright and relaxed, with wide paths along the water and great views of the Golden Gate from Crissy Field. It’s a great spot for walking, running, riding a bike. You’ll find there many nice coffee shops, stores and restaurants, especially on Chestnut Street and Union Street. Just next door, the Presidio offers quiet trails, tall trees, and plenty of space to relax and hike. Together, they’re ideal for a peaceful day outdoors. Nothing beats a morning jogging in the Marina, along the Crissy Field. Many locals do it every day!

My go-to spots in the Marina: Crissy Field Beach, Cafe Reveille (for coffee and brunch), Bonita (Mexican Food), Delarosa (best pizza), Celeste (wine bar and pita) and Palm House (the best cocktails)

THe mission District

The Mission in San Francisco is colorful, lively, and full of great food, especially Mexican food. Murals cover the walls, local shops line the streets, and the neighborhood has a strong creative energy and Latin Vibe. It’s a fun place to explore, eat, and people-watch.

What to see in the Mission? Mission Dolores Park, cute restaurants and cafes on the Valencia, Pizzeria Delfina, Murals at the Women’s Building and Clarion Alley,

Russian hill & Nob Hill

These two hilltop neighborhoods offer classic San Francisco views over the city and beautiful old homes. I used to live in Russian Hill for over 5 years and I loved it. Russian Hill feels cozy and residential, while Nob Hill has more of a historic, grand atmosphere and it’s located closer to downtown. Both are great for slow walks and scenic photos. You will find there many cute coffee shops, bars and restaurants.

My favorite park is Ina Coolbrith Park located in Russian Hill neighborhood, with amazing views over Alcatraz and downtown San Francisco. If you’re wondering what to do in Nob Hill, just stroll around the streets and explore different cafes and restaurants. Don’t forget to take the cable car!

What to see in Russian Hill & Nob Hill? Ina Coolbrith Park, California Street, Huntington Park, Grace Cathedral, Pizza in Back to Back, Sandwich in Crostini & Java, Breakfast in Le Marais Cafe and Union Square

Pacific Heights

If you’re looking for a picturesque neighborhood with expensive villas, residences and Victorian Houses, check out Pacific Heights neighborhood. It is quiet, elegant, and full of beautiful architecture. With its parks, boutiques, and sweeping views, it’s a lovely area to take a calm stroll and enjoy a more refined side of the city.

Pacific Heights is mostly a residential neighborhood with expensive houses, there are not too many coffee shops there or restaurants, however the views are absolutely stunning. I suggest walking to Cow Hollow and the Marina if you’re looking for places to eat and drink, it’s such a beautiful walk.

The Haight (Haight-Ashbury)

If you remember the hippies and the Summer of Love in the 1960s, you’ll enjoy the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. It’s colorful, quirky, and full of character. The area sits between Golden Gate Park and Buena Vista Park, so there are plenty of trails and nature spots nearby. Vintage shops, street art, and casual cafés make it a fun place to explore. The neighborhood has a relaxed, playful vibe—that’s part of what makes it special. In Haight-Ashbury, you’ll see lots of murals, cool old houses, and shops with psychedelic and unusual items.

Chinatown SF

Chinatown San Francisco is a vibrant neighborhood located right next to North Beach. It’s full of dim sum bakeries, Chinese restaurants, herbal shops, and produce stores with veggies, fruits, fish, and spices. You’ll feel like you’re in China as you wander through its lively streets. The area is one of the oldest Chinatowns in North America. Don’t forget to check out Grant Avenue and the Dragon Gate!

Local Tips for Exploring San Francisco Neighborhoods

When exploring San Francisco’s neighborhoods, keep in mind that many are situated on or between hills, so some areas may require more walking. I also recommend taking Uber or Lyft, as parking can be difficult—though not impossible. Be sure to bring layers, since temperatures vary from one neighborhood to another. Chinatown and North Beach tend to be the warmest, while the Marina and Presidio can be quite windy.
